I live in a desert. Not the most stereotypical kind, with blowing sand dunes for miles under a searing sun. No this is the high desert, an elevation of over 4500 feet and rippling mountain ranges looming over the sagebrush filled valleys. This desert gets a little more moisture than others, usually in winter and often in the form of snow. This surprises people, that we get snow here. The snow and related rain bring life to this desert, making it a special place indeed. Snakes, kangaroo rats and packrats, owls, hawks, coyotes, wild horses and much more make their home here, eking a life out of the arid land. It is no doubt a difficult life, compared to the comfortable homes that the humans that live here reside in. But these critters manage and even thrive here. Even in years like this one, wherein we\u2019ve seen much less winter snow and rain, there are always to be seen the denizens of the desert, coyotes on the hunt, crossing the road in front of you at night, horses wandering the hills, hawks arching through the clear blue skies. They survive, these creatures, in spite of adversity. And I think that is a lesson for all of us. We can face adversity and even poverty in our daily lives and yet we can still survive and survive well. For us, we need to keep seeking and finding those tidbits that can keep us going. Like the horses nibbling cheatgrass or the quail finding seeds, we can ourselves nibble our way to happiness. It doesn\u2019t always mean big bites, like that pricey Disneyland vacation, but maybe small ones, like a trip to the park or family game night. Find those tidbits to keep you going and let them accumulate to make a good life overall. Keep seeking, keep nibbling and you will find life is good indeed, in spite of the desert around you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
